Kojima Is Wary of AI Replacing Artists After DLSS 5

Hideo Kojima says DLSS 5 work on Death Stranding 2 left him with mixed feelings, and he is not keen on AI taking work from artists.

Hideo Kojima has spent much of the past week discussing artificial intelligence, and his conclusion is far from a ringing endorsement. Speaking on his Koji10 radio programme, the designer said he holds mixed feelings about tools such as Nvidia's DLSS 5, which had recently been applied to Death Stranding 2. He accepted that the technology can be genuinely useful for narrow chores, including restoring faded photographs, adding colour to old images, or cleaning up archive film that would otherwise occupy a full engineering team. He even suggested that remasters and remakes might one day be handled automatically.

What troubles him is where the line sits. Kojima argued that machine learning cannot grasp creative intent, so a system reshaping an existing work cannot know why a particular lighting setup or mood was chosen. As the person who made the original, he said, he would not want a tool making those calls of its own accord unless he controlled it directly. He expects the practice to become standard regardless. Death Stranding 2 was caught up in the DLSS 5 conversation, and that experience appears to have shaped his caution about what the technology can actually offer his studio.
