Supermassive, Ninja Theory and The Coalition Face Layoffs
Fresh redundancies hit Supermassive and Ninja Theory while The Coalition staff brace for cuts, with a Warhorse founder warning of worse to come.
The wave of job losses across the games industry shows no sign of easing, with several studios in the headlines this week. Supermassive, the British team behind Until Dawn and the Dark Pictures anthology, has completed a redundancy round first flagged in August, when up to seventy-five roles were placed at risk. Former staff say more than seventy people have now left, spanning developers, artists, producers and quality assurance, with a long-serving director calling them a loss for any studio.
Ninja Theory, the Xbox-owned Hellblade studio, appears to be heading toward closure after two attempts to sell it collapsed. Employees have announced departures over the past week, with one programmer lamenting that the team will not get to finish its current project. At The Coalition, sources told Eurogamer that confidence has given way to anxiety following the September layoff of Gears of War: E-Day's story director shortly before release. Warhorse co-founder Martin Klima separately predicted that rising costs could push development toward cheaper regions such as central and eastern Europe.
