Analyst: Game Pass Will Eat Most Gears of War E-Day Revenue

Alinea Analytics says Gears of War: E-Day has passed 120,000 Steam sales, but Game Pass will cannibalize most of its Xbox revenue.

Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics published a report arguing that Gears of War: E-Day, which arrives on Game Pass at launch, will have most of its Xbox revenue eaten by the subscription rather than by sales. On Steam the shooter has already moved past 120,000 copies and generated over seven million dollars, more than double what Halo: Campaign Evolved managed over a comparable window. Elliott does not expect it to ever reach a million copies on the platform. The game launches October 6, with paid early access from October 1.

Elliott also covered the scrapped PlayStation 5 version, saying Microsoft should not have pulled it because a port would have added sorely needed revenue, and predicting one arrives at some point anyway. He described E-Day and Clockwork Revolution as sacrificial lambs for hearts and minds rather than economics, arguing exclusivity no longer drives console sales. Microsoft has already begun removing titles from Game Pass, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 held back until autumn 2027, and Xbox chief Asha Sharma has floated windowing releases to protect direct sales. Elliott also noted that Steam sales alone cannot capture everyone who signs up for the subscription just to try the game.
