Jagex pulls Dragon Slayer 2 trailer over generative AI row

Jagex took down a RuneFest trailer for Dragon Slayer 2 after players spotted six fingers and other telltale signs, blaming a 'trusted external partner'.

Jagex pulled a RuneFest trailer for the Dragon Slayer 2 quest in RuneScape 3 after viewers spotted glaring generative AI artefacts, including a knight with six fingers and a sneaker-like sole on his armoured footwear. Statements posted to both the Old School RuneScape and mainline RuneScape subreddits said the footage had been taken down for an urgent investigation, as reported by Eurogamer, PC Gamer and Kotaku within hours of each other. The row has turned Jagex's public stance on the technology into an awkward talking point.

In the posts, moderator Alec 'Mod Sween' Sween said the trailer came from an external partner that had confirmed no generative AI would be used, describing the six-fingered character as hard to explain away. Jagex added that it does not use the technology for its games, artwork or marketing, and will not knowingly allow it on its behalf while it overhauls its review processes. Sween said the team should have caught the problem and could not simply place the blame on a partner. The apology followed separate backlash over a 100 Thieves clothing collaboration days earlier.
