Warhammer: Blood Bowl is Blood Bowl 3.5, and that's fine

A beta build shows a sharper rules update and a faster seven-a-side Rumble Mode that finally gives lighter teams room to breathe.

Warhammer: Blood Bowl is not a reinvention, more an incremental sequel that leans on polish. Small quality-of-life wins, such as saving and quitting mid-match against the AI, make squeezing in a game before bed far less painful. The headline addition is Rumble Mode, a shrunken seven-a-side variant drawn from the tabletop Sevens format. Halves run six turns instead of eight and rerolls cost double, so failure comes faster, and without a line of scrimmage fragile teams no longer risk losing three players on the first turn.

The build also folds in the tabletop game's third season rules. Stalling is punished by a rock-throwing crowd and rewarded with a bonus for scoring promptly, new passing rules strip out the most punishing misfires, and MVP points are limited to nominated players rather than handed to a random benchwarmer. The AI still makes the odd baffling decision but at least chooses the better block die. The public playtest opens October 7 on Steam, with the full release due by year's end. Whether Rumble Mode becomes the default way most people play the game remains to be seen, but it is the most interesting thing here.
