Valve Rethinks How Games Win Steam Front-Page Space

The storefront is retiring hand-picked sale slots in favour of personalised recommendations, with the change due in early 2027.

Valve is changing how games are surfaced during sales and promotions on Steam. The old model relied on a manually curated calendar, with employees choosing which titles filled a limited number of fixed slots, meaning only a fraction of discounted games ever reached the front page. Under the new approach, dynamic recommendations shaped by a user's preferences and purchase history decide what appears. Valve says early experiments put up to ten times as many games a day into the Discounts and Events section, and produced measurable gains in store page visits and wishlist additions.

For developers the practical effect is less dependence on relationships, pitches and luck. Smaller teams and publishers, which cannot match the marketing budgets of large studios, gain a more even footing. Valve has already paused scheduled curated placements in its Weekend, Midweek and Daily Deals sections and says updated tools for managing discounts and sale events are coming. The rollout is expected in early 2027. The timing lands just ahead of the Steam Autumn Sale on October 1, with Next Fest and several themed events following before the Winter Sale in December.
