Ubisoft's Gen-AI Push Is Codenamed Motherbrain

Trademark filings point to the Assassin's Creed publisher's internal name for its generative-AI plans, a nod to Metroid's villain.

Trademark applications filed by Ubisoft point to an internal name for its generative-AI work: Motherbrain, a knowing nod to the brain-in-a-jar antagonist of Nintendo's Metroid series. The filings describe downloadable software that uses AI to build video games and interactive content, plus a service for analysing data and interacting with people, per reporting first surfaced by The Game File and picked up by Kotaku.

Ubisoft has not shown the project off publicly, and the term appears to be used behind closed doors for now. The publisher has already leaned hard into the technology, describing it as a shift on the scale of the jump from 2D to 3D, launching the Ghostwriter dialogue tool in 2023 and pushing a playable AI shooter called Teammates this summer.
