Overwatch's China-only rewards spark a fan backlash
Hero flourishes for Shion, Kiriko and Reaper stay behind a regional wall, and players elsewhere are tired of being handed a smaller game.
Blizzard's Overwatch has once again shipped content that only one region gets to play, and the community is not taking it quietly. The latest batch of China-exclusive cosmetics and hero flourishes, tied to the company's partnership with NetEase, covers familiar faces including Shion, Kiriko and Reaper, but stays locked to the Chinese market. For players elsewhere, that arrangement reads less like a regional quirk and more like paying customers being handed a version of the game that is visibly missing pieces.
The frustration echoes past rounds of the same argument, when the arrangement with the Chinese partner produced rewards that never travelled west. Fans point out that defending the practice is difficult when the roster and the shop are otherwise identical everywhere, and the only real difference is who gets to buy in. Blizzard has offered little in the way of a roadmap for bringing the content across, which leaves the dispute where it usually ends up: a complaint aired in public, and no answer attached to it. Until Blizzard says otherwise, that is where the matter stays.
