Modern Warfare 4 Adds Server Culling Anti-Cheat

Activision says the new system hides opponent positions from the data clients receive.

Activision has announced a new anti-cheat measure for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 called Server Culling, aimed squarely at wallhacks. The publisher explains that traditional multiplayer design sends location data to each player machine so the match can run locally, and that is exactly the information a wallhack reads. Server Culling instead uses a custom-built visibility system woven into each map so that the positions of hidden opponents are withheld from the client, which the company says makes wallhacks far less effective.

Activision says the technique runs alongside the existing RICOCHET anti-cheat systems and will cover every Modern Warfare 4 launch map, plus DMZ and Combat Outpost, with season one updates across all modes. It is the latest in a run of anti-cheat announcements from the publisher, which has also pursued cheat makers directly. Whether it removes cheating from the game is another matter: cheats and the players buying them tend to adapt once a new method appears. The publisher has also posted videos of its lawyers serving papers on cheat makers at their homes.
