Krafton Cancels PUBG Spin-Off Black Budget
The extraction shooter is dropped nine months after its closed alpha test on Steam.
Krafton has ended development of PUBG: Black Budget, an extraction shooter spin-off of its battle royale, less than a year after the game was revealed. The title had been through a closed alpha test on Steam nine months earlier. The publisher said the decision followed a loss of confidence in where the project was going, arguing that the current direction of Black Budget would not lead to something players would want to keep playing over the long term.
Krafton added that the team at PUBG Studios took valuable lessons from the work and that those lessons will feed into future projects, without saying what those projects are. Black Budget was one of several attempts by the company to build a second pillar next to the main battle royale, following other spin-offs that also struggled to find a lasting audience. No release window for the game had ever been announced, and no refunds apply because the alpha was never sold. The spin-off was unveiled as part of Krafton's effort to build on PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, the battle royale that made the company.
