Japan's PC games market has more than doubled in four years

Industry data presented at Tokyo Game Show shows PC revenue climbing sharply in a country long dominated by consoles and phones.

PC gaming revenue in Japan has grown by more than 200 percent since 2021, according to preliminary figures from the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association, presented at Tokyo Game Show. The figure moves the country from a market where consoles and mobile dominated to one where the PC is a genuine third platform.

Global hits with strong PC followings, including Counter-Strike 2 and PUBG, are credited with leading the shift, along with the growing reach of Steam in a market that traditionally bought boxed console software. The association's full report is due in December.
