Free Quake Rooftops Jam adds 19 maps to the classic FPS
A new free fan level pack for Quake turns rooftops into the main play space, a setting the id Software shooter from 1996 barely ever used across its corridors.
A new free level pack for Quake has arrived, and it is built entirely around rooftops, a setting the id Software classic barely ever uses. Quake Rooftops Jam adds 19 community maps, each reworking the idea of fighting across a virtual skyline. That theme is unusual for a corridor shooter from 1996, where rooftops were only ever glimpsed in the distance. It is more the territory of games like Thief: The Dark Project and its spiritual successor Dishonored, which makes turning it into the primary play space a genuine design challenge.
The results are varied. One entry from developer Robert Yang sets a nonlinear map in a sunlit Mediterranean coastal village partly submerged in water. Others include a sprawling cityscape mixing several architectural styles and stuffed with platforming, plus a gothic maze of spires floating in a misty purple void. The pack follows a strong year for Quake mapping, which has already brought large community jams, anniversary collections and an official campaign. Rooftops Jam can be downloaded from Slipseer and is intended to run through source ports such as Ironwail or vkQuake.
