Del Toro confirms he was in talks for BioShock film
The filmmaker told IGN he held talks years ago and calls one of them among the most disastrous of his career, as a separate film pushes ahead.
Guillermo del Toro has finally confirmed long-standing rumours that he was once in discussions to direct a film based on BioShock. Speaking to IGN, the filmmaker said the conversations happened, and he described one of them as probably among the most disastrous calls of his entire career. He explained that games and films tell their stories in fundamentally different ways: players solve puzzles and assemble things, and while a camera can move in similar fashion, the interactive structure of a game does not translate cleanly into a passive narrative.
Reports linking del Toro to the project first surfaced on internet forums in 2008, a year after the original game launched, and he had never confirmed his involvement until now, saying only that BioShock ranked among his favourite games. A BioShock film is still moving forward regardless, but with Francis Lawrence, the director behind the Hunger Games series, at the helm instead. It will adapt the first game, with a script by Justin Rhodes, and it still has no release date after being announced back in 2022.

BioShock
BioShock drops you into Rapture, an underwater city built on a philosophy that failed, with plasmids in one hand and a wrench in the other. The recordings you find are the only account of what happened there.
