Capcom Plans to Evolve RE Engine Into an AI-Era Tool

The studio's REX initiative aims to fold AI into its in-house engine, with a programmer outlining efficiency and QA improvements at a Capcom conference.

Capcom is looking to evolve its proprietary RE Engine into what it calls an AI-era game engine, with the stated goal of creating games together with artificial intelligence. Programmer Satoshi Ishida outlined the plans at the Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026, according to reports. The effort, referred to as the REX initiative, is aimed at easing the lengthy development cycles that have become standard for large-scale titles, and is said to span improvements to tools, quality assurance and efficiency.

The proposals point to a set of internal improvements rather than a finished product, and no specific games were attached to the plans. The direction reflects a wider industry interest in using AI to cut the time and cost of production, a subject that has drawn both enthusiasm and caution across the sector. Competing studios have made similar noises about AI-assisted pipelines in recent months, though few have detailed concrete results. For now the initiative remains a company programme, with Capcom yet to say how or when the changes would reach the games built with the engine.
