Borderlands Online revival is playable in English at last

Eleven years after its China-only shutdown, the fan-restored MMO known as BLOL is live, free and already drawing players.

Borderlands Online never left China, and it shut down a decade ago, so the odds of playing it in English were close to zero until a modder and indie developer called EpicNNG obtained a build and refused to give up on it. That was April of last year. Getting past the login screen alone took months, and the work ballooned well beyond anything he had attempted before, dwarfing his earlier preservation projects and forcing him to rely on volunteers.

The revived project, now called BLOL, is finally in playtesting and can be played online or offline, entirely free. Bringing it to English meant translating the game, resizing interface elements to fit longer strings and rebuilding some HUD art by hand. EpicNNG is upfront that bugs, broken skills, odd animations and server outages should be expected, and a first hotfix has already landed. Around a thousand accounts were created within four hours of launch. The team moved sooner than planned, wary of losing the groundwork to the rapid rise of generative tools, though it accepts a takedown could still come later.
