Boltgun 2's rotatable level broke its own dev team

Auroch Digital's designer describes Vicious Circles, a spinning tentacle lock of a map that turned your Space Marine into the key, ahead of launch.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 lands next week, and Auroch Digital has been talking up the more deranged corners of its level design. Principal designer Matt Bone described one map, comfortingly named Vicious Circles, as essentially a giant spinning lock packed with tentacles, with your Space Marine or Sister of Battle serving as the key that turns the whole thing. Rotating an entire arena while fighting through it was, by his own account, a nightmare to build and a running joke its coders may never let him forget.

The boast fits the sequel's broad brief: a chunky, retro-styled first-person shooter that treats the grimdark setting as a licence for excess rather than restraint. Boltgun 2 follows a game that already won players over with weighty bolter fire and a comic-book attitude, and its selling point is more of that, pushed further. Whether a twisting fleshmetal puzzle plays as well as it sounds is the real test, but the team clearly built it to be memorable first and comfortable second, whatever the debugging cost to whoever inherits it later.
