Bethesda Tells AI Fan Game Fallout: New York To Stop

The browser game built with Claude Opus 5.5 drew 3.5m views before ZeniMax legal stepped in.

A fan-made Fallout game that ran inside a browser has been taken down after its creator said they received a cease and desist notice from ZeniMax, the parent company of Bethesda. Fallout: New York was built with Anthropic Claude Opus 5.5 and shipped 117 locations, 112 characters and 46 weapons, with no texture files and no sound files at all, because every building, weapon, face and sound was generated by code.

The creator showed the project off on 28 September, and the video attached to that post has since been watched roughly 3.5 million times. Reaction split sharply: part of the audience called it AI slop full of cursed faces, while others read it as a sign of where these tools are heading. According to the creator, at least one of those viewers worked for ZeniMax legal, and the browser game is no longer available in its original form. The post advertising it listed quests, dialogue trees, a working V.A.T.S. system and a Pip-Boy, all rendered without a single image file.
