Rockstar Explains How GTA 6 Gets Built, Block by Block

Rockstar North boss Rob Nelson explains the milestone-driven method behind Grand Theft Auto 6 and the studio's refusal to chase trends.

Rockstar has offered a rare look at how a project the size of Grand Theft Auto 6 actually gets assembled. In a new interview, Rockstar North boss Rob Nelson described a process that begins by building assets and systems, then roughing in content across every discipline before refining it. Much of the work runs on eight-week milestones, where selected pieces of the game are compiled, reviewed, adjusted on feedback and then pushed forward, year after year.

Nelson credited the studio's long-serving staff, many of whom have collaborated for years and share a clear sense of what is required. Writing director James Horton said there are no shortcuts to a convincing open world, arguing that every corner must hold up whether a player races past it or stops to stare. Rockstar even set up a dedicated Los Angeles team for non-player characters. Rather than chase whatever is fashionable, the studio appears to trust its own instincts. The game's marketing has already spilled into the real world, with Miami venues adopting Vice City branding ahead of the November 19 launch.
