Reigns Studio Nerial Shuts Down After Two Years Of Losses

The developer behind Reigns and Card Shark is closing and entering what it calls hibernation mode following significant trading losses.

Nerial, the studio behind the Reigns series and Card Shark, has announced that it is closing. Its founders, chief executive Tamara Alliot and creative director Francois Alliot, said they decided together with the studio's partner Devolver to end development and close the company. Nerial said it is entering what it described as hibernation mode. The statement noted the team had spent 13 years together and published 11 games over that period.

The shutdown follows a difficult stretch for the studio. Devolver Digital acquired Nerial in 2021, and last year the team was cut by 40 percent. A fiscal report indicated the company suffered two years of significant trading losses and had become dependent on support from Devolver, losing over 800,000 pounds in 2025 and nearly one million pounds in 2024. Devolver will keep the rights to Nerial's existing catalogue. Nerial had nine employees, including its founders, who said they plan to keep making games and return to the studio's roots after taking a break to reflect. The founders thanked their team and said they hope to work with its members again in the future.
