LOTRO Reveals The Wolves of Mordor Expansion, Out October 21
Standing Stone Games is bringing werewolves back to Middle-earth, with a new expansion launching October 21.
The Lord of the Rings Online has revealed its next expansion, The Wolves of Mordor, and it is arriving sooner than many expected. Standing Stone Games has set an October 21 launch, with werewolves returning to threaten Middle-earth once again. The studio only opened the public beta for the expansion's new zones and its survival instincts system this week, so players are testing the content at roughly the same moment the date becomes public. Pre-orders and a neighbour system form part of the same announcement, which landed without the long teaser campaign MMO players have come to expect.
An MMO expansion revealed and then released within weeks is a rare thing, and it suggests the work behind the scenes has been running far longer than the marketing. Players have been asking for new regions and systems for a long time, and the survival instincts mechanic sounds like an attempt to change how they move through dangerous ground. Whether such a short beta leaves testers enough time to surface problems is the open question, and it is one that a live service game cannot answer until launch day actually arrives.
