Warhammer 3 modder corrupts own mod to foil AI copies

A Total War: Warhammer 3 modder deliberately broke his own overhaul to stop AI-made reuploads, then restored a working build once the attention spread.

A popular overhaul mod for Total War: Warhammer 3 was deliberately broken by its own creator this week in an attempt to stop unauthorised copies, several of which were reportedly produced with the help of AI tools. Venris, who maintains SFO: Grimhammer III, wrote on Patreon that a growing number of reuploads used AI in the process, prompting him to corrupt the files so they would not function when taken. He warned that continued abuse could lead him to make the mod private altogether. Updating the project for game version 9.0, alongside the Lords of the End Times expansion, is already a substantial job.

The creator stressed that SFO is the product of roughly a decade of work and that he does not permit use of it without permission, particularly for AI-related purposes. A look at other communities, from Skyrim to Project Zomboid, shows similar waves of machine-made mods attracting complaints from users. After discussion spread, Venris restored a working build for game version 8.1.1, saying the temporary sabotage had at least drawn attention to the problem. He added that he hopes AI serves as a tool that supports modding rather than replaces it.
