FF7 Revelation Director Pushed for a Physical Disc
Naoki Hamaguchi says he argued for the remake finale to ship on disc, even though the single disc holds only the opening of the game.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the closing chapter of the remake trilogy, launches on April 8 and will ship on disc, but with a large caveat. Where Rebirth spanned two discs, Revelation fits on a single one that holds only the opening portion of the game; players must connect to the internet to download and play the rest. Director Naoki Hamaguchi told Radio Times that he pushed hard for a physical release at all, recalling his childhood of collecting games and saying he still buys discs for titles he feels attached to.
Even so, Hamaguchi expects physical media to become essentially disc-less before long, describing a future where a box contains only a code on a piece of paper, similar to Switch 2 game-key cards. He acknowledged the no-disc, no-purchase campaign on social media and said he did his best to argue for the disc edition, but noted that the product line-up and how the game goes on sale sit with the publishing team rather than the director, so his authority there is limited. The discussion lands as PlayStation prepares to stop producing physical games in 2028.
