Fable reboot gets first hands-on preview at Xbox FanFest

Playground Games' revival of the RPG series was playable at the London event, with press trying a combat-focused slice ahead of its February release.

Fable, Playground Games' revival of the long-dormant role-playing series, has been played by the press for the first time. Pure Xbox went hands-on at the Xbox FanFest in London, where the game was declared playable and quickly became the most in-demand title at the show. Its writer booked a slot and spent around 15 minutes with a combat-focused slice of the game, which was built to demonstrate melee, magic and ranged attacks. The preview noted that the demo was only the smallest taste of the full release, which is scheduled to arrive next February.

Combat had been the outlet's biggest concern ahead of release, and the hands-on left it more reassured than worried. The preview described attacks with a sense of weight and momentum, with combos that chain from one enemy to the next, and singled out magic as a strong source of variety. A parry system that slows time to signal the correct window was called a little clunky at first glance. The build ran at a smooth 60 frames per second, and the demo featured a companion character named Humphrey, played by Matt King.
