Ex-PlayStation Boss: Sony and Nintendo Should Delay Next Gen
Shuhei Yoshida argues rising component prices mean Sony and Nintendo should stretch the PS5 and Switch 2 generations for as long as they can.
Shuhei Yoshida, former president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, told The Vergecast that platform holders have already sold plenty of current hardware and should not rush to replace it. Because component costs, especially parts specific to consoles and PCs, are climbing far faster than other entertainment spending, he expects Sony and Nintendo to push back their next launches. People have finite budgets, he argued, and owners of a PS5, a Switch 2 or a good enough PC are likely to stay put rather than upgrade while prices are this high.
Yoshida offered his own example, saying he bought a gaming PC five years ago and then delayed the replacement when prices jumped, a decision he now regrets making late. He does not hear players or developers demanding more power, which is why he expects the current generation to keep selling well for years. Xbox is a different case in his view, a team that wants to change the competitive landscape and now has its turn to play. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S both turn six this November, close to the historic six or seven year cycle.
