Echo Weaver is a knowledge-based metroidvania out now
Moonlight Kids' time-loop follow-up to Wild at Heart launches day one on Game Pass, trading gear upgrades for knowledge and hard-won mastery.
Echo Weaver, the follow-up to 2021's Wild at Heart from three-person studio Moonlight Kids, is out now on Xbox Series X|S and PC, launching day one into Game Pass. The team calls it a metroidbrainia rather than a metroidvania: you never collect new gear, only knowledge, and every ability you need is available from the start if you can work out how to use it. The studio describes the design as starting somewhere oppressive and mastering your way into brighter, stranger spaces as you learn the loop.
The game traps you in Provenance, a space colony broken by an event known as the Collapse, and in a clockwork time loop. Each cycle gives you minutes to live before it resets, and progress comes from understanding the world rather than grinding for upgrades, so nothing here is procedural. Publisher Akupara Games describes it as a blend of Outer Wilds, Celeste and Edge of Tomorrow, and says the knowledge-gated design made it one of the hardest projects the team has built, partly because a world with no loading screens demanded constant saving of almost everything.
