Developer says games need to cost more, GTA 6 missed its shot

Joe Brammer of Wardogs says rising development costs make a price rise inevitable, and that Rockstar could have set the standard.

Joe Brammer, who leads the tactical shooter Wardogs, has argued that game prices need to rise to match development costs, and that Rockstar passed up the moment to normalise it. GTA 6 is expected to be the biggest release in years, and pricing it at the established level, with a more expensive collector edition on top, sets the ceiling for everyone else.

The argument is not new: prices moved to 70 dollars a few years ago and have stayed there while budgets grew. What makes it sharper now is that hardware costs are climbing and publishers are cutting studios, so the industry is debating price and cost at the same time.
