Cyberpunk 2077 dev says Phantom Liberty does not erase launch
Three years on, designer Pawel Sasko says the expansion's 15 million sales do not cancel out the base game's disastrous 2020 debut.
Phantom Liberty has now sold more than 15 million copies, three years after the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion arrived and helped restore the RPG's standing. Designer Pawel Sasko marked the anniversary with a long post on X, and used it to push back on the idea that the expansion's reception writes over how the base game began.
Cyberpunk 2077 launched in December 2020 in a poor state, with performance problems and bugs that were addressed through a run of patches, among them the large 1.5 next-gen update and the Edgerunners tie-in. Sasko said he does not see Phantom Liberty as erasing that debut and would not want the studio's story told in those terms, adding that the lessons in trusting his team and giving characters space have stayed with him.

Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world action RPG set in Night City, where the player builds a mercenary character out of implants, weapons and dialogue choices. Several storylines run in parallel and how they are completed depends on the build and on what the character says.
