Courtois joins Astralis owner Fusion via NXTPLAY

Real Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois and Gonzalo Vila invest in Fusion Esports Group, which owns Astralis, as the team's accounts flag a liquidity shortfall.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and entrepreneur Gonzalo Vila have joined Fusion Esports Group, the owner of Astralis, as investors through their fund NXTPLAY. The investment was announced on Tuesday, 29 September, eight weeks after the organisations audited accounts were signed on 1 August. Financial terms were not disclosed, so the size of NXTPLAYs stake and the amount of fresh funding for Fusion remain unclear. The deal adds a prominent athlete to Fusions ownership group, though the announcement does not say what role the investors will take beyond their stakes. NXTPLAY has a portfolio that includes French club Le Mans FC, Spains CD Extremadura and Belgiums KRC Genk.

The backing arrives while the teams finances draw scrutiny. Fusion acquired Astralis in September 2025, and its operating subsidiary Astralis CS ApS reported a DKK 19.1 million net loss for 2025, negative equity of DKK 3.9 million and cash of DKK 97,633 at 31 December. Average full-time headcount fell from 18 to 11, and the accounts warned the company depended on additional liquidity. A 24 September company-register entry recorded a DKK 752.76 nominal capital increase issued at 4,251 times nominal value, implying about DKK 3.2 million for roughly 2.4 percent of enlarged share capital. NXTPLAY is not listed among Fusions registered owners.
