Capcom Shows Off REX, The Next Step For Its RE Engine
At its RE:2026 conference, Capcom outlined REX, a project to evolve the RE Engine without replacing the technology behind its biggest games.
Capcom has given an unusually detailed look at how it plans to evolve the technology behind its biggest games. At the company's CAPCOM Open Conference RE:2026, programmer Satoshi Ishida presented the next phase of the RE Engine and introduced a project called REX. Rather than replacing the technology Capcom has relied on for years, REX is designed to push it forward while keeping the existing foundation intact.
The RE Engine was originally developed in 2014 and first used commercially with Resident Evil 7 in 2017. Since then it has powered more than 27 Capcom titles and become the backbone of much of the company's output. After more than eight years of continuous development, however, the studio says it has run into challenges that can no longer be solved simply by adding more features. REX is Capcom's answer to that problem, charting a course for the engine as it heads into a very different future. The presentation offered a rare, behind-the-scenes view of how the company builds the tools it makes its games with.
