BBC chief calls an AI Doctor Who episode pretty good

Matt Brittin said a 50-minute AI episode was pretty good and that anyone can now make studio-grade content, though humans stay essential.

The BBC director general has watched a fifty-minute episode of Doctor Who generated entirely by artificial intelligence and described it as pretty good. Matt Brittin, who took charge of the broadcaster in May after almost twenty years at Google, made the remarks during a session at the Royal Television Society conference in London. He argued that the technology now allows ordinary people, potentially billions of them, to produce content at a standard that once belonged to Hollywood studios, while adding that he does not believe it will replace human creators.

Brittin did not name the project he saw, but it is almost certainly The Unmade Season, a fan-made effort that continues the show with an actor voiced by artificial intelligence who plays a new incarnation of the Doctor. Viewers who have watched it describe the result as technically impressive but narratively thin, and it leans heavily on monsters and imagery owned by the broadcaster. Doctor Who itself remains in limbo. Ncuti Gatwa left after two seasons, the promised Christmas special was scrapped, showrunner Russell T Davies has departed, and the BBC is now inviting production companies to bid for the series, hoping fresh episodes might arrive in 2028 or 2029.
