What Mobius Digital is

Mobius Digital is an independent game studio based in downtown Los Angeles. Its press page states that the company was founded by Masi Oka, described there as a star of the television series Heroes and Hawaii Five-0, with the aim of assembling a creative team capable of producing original games. The studio says it hired a small crew of people who had previously worked on independent games, including the student version of Outer Wilds.

The team produced three independent titles for iOS and Android before the company grew in size and became a console and personal computer studio. Mobius Digital says it is independent and sets out four core values on the same page: exploration, cultural collaboration, emotional impact and new perspectives. The same press page also lists the storefronts where the game is sold, pointing readers to the Microsoft, Epic Games and PlayStation stores.

Outer Wilds

According to its own press page, Mobius Digital released Outer Wilds in May 2019, when the studio moved from mobile work to console and personal computer development. The same page lists an expansion, Echoes of the Eye, released in September 2021, followed by releases of the game and expansion on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2022 and on Nintendo Switch in 2023.

The Steam store page for Outer Wilds gives the developer as Mobius Digital and the publisher as Annapurna Interactive, with a Steam release date of June 18, 2020. That page also states that the game won Best Game at the 2020 BAFTA Games Awards and describes it as an open world mystery set in a solar system trapped in a time loop.

How the studio describes its work

The studio's core values section is unusually specific about intent. Under exploration it says Mobius views games as portals into new worlds, and under new perspectives it says the team aims to build mechanics, worlds and experiences that push players to think about the world differently. The cultural collaboration value describes the founder, the team and their families as having roots around the world.

On its press page the studio also states plainly what it does not do, saying that it does not make games to make a quick return but to have an effect on players. The page doubles as a press kit, listing supported platforms for Outer Wilds with links to the Microsoft, Epic Games and PlayStation storefronts.

Platforms and releases

Mobius Digital's press page lists Outer Wilds as available on platforms including the Microsoft Store, the Epic Games Store and the PlayStation Store, and its release timeline on that page covers the 2019 launch, the 2021 expansion, the 2022 current-generation console releases and the 2023 Switch release. The Steam listing adds a separate personal computer release date of June 18, 2020, which is later than the studio's stated May 2019 launch and reflects the staggered availability of the game across storefronts.

Mobius Digital lists Outer Wilds as one of several releases on its press page, alongside its earlier smaller titles. The press page functions as the studio's own kit for the game, listing storefront links to the Microsoft Store, the Epic Games Store and the PlayStation Store alongside the release timeline. A separate support forum is linked from the same site, and the studio also publishes news posts and product pages for its earlier mobile releases under its own domain.
