Xbox Launches XP Division for Movies, TV and Merchandise
The new branch, led by Lucasfilm veteran Kayleen Walters, covers film, consumer products, live events and brand partnerships.
Xbox has unveiled a new division called XP, dedicated to pushing its franchises beyond games and into film, television, live events and consumer products. The branch is led by Lucasfilm veteran Kayleen Walters, who previously ran Mojang and served as an executive producer on A Minecraft Movie. XP is split into four arms: Pictures for film and television, Products for merchandise, Places for attractions and broadcasts, and Partnerships for creator and brand tie-ins.
Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball pointed to Walters' record at Mojang, where Minecraft sales climbed from 350 million to more than 425 million units and merchandising broke into the global top 20. It is not the company's first multimedia swing; Xbox Entertainment Studios launched in 2012 with plans for shows on its consoles and closed two years later. This time the ambition is stated more broadly, with executives describing a goal of becoming the world's leading entertainment company. A Minecraft Movie sequel, a third Fallout season and a Call of Duty film are already in development.
