Xbox Disc-To-Digital Program Now Live for All Players

Following an Xbox Insiders test, Microsoft lets Xbox One and Series X owners claim digital licenses for supported physical games.

Microsoft's disc-to-digital program is now live worldwide, open to every Xbox One and Xbox Series X owner, after first being tested with Xbox Insiders. The system lets owners receive digital licenses for many, though not all, of their physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S games. To claim a license for a supported title, players insert the disc into a console while signed in. A notification then confirms that the license has been granted. The disc can belong to an older Xbox One library or a newer Xbox Series X|S one.

Inserting a disc also starts installing the game automatically. Either console can be used for the process, even if the games being claimed are Xbox Series X titles. That behaviour can be switched off in the Profile and system section of the settings menu, under Devices and connections. The program is meant to keep physical libraries usable as the industry moves toward an all-digital future. One practical obstacle is storage: a single install can run from around 30GB to as much as 170-190GB, and drive prices remain high, so backing up a large collection of discs may require extra hardware and some careful planning.
