Micron Warns RAM Shortage Will Worsen Into 2028
Micron's boss says memory demand will keep outpacing supply through 2027 and 2028, adding pressure to Xbox's Project Helix.
The memory crunch hitting PC and console hardware is not expected to ease any time soon. Micron chief executive Sanjay Mehrotra said on the company's earnings call that demand will exceed supply in both 2027 and 2028, and that the gap will be wider than in 2026. He said the supply and demand environment is only getting tighter and that Micron has no clear sight of when the two will return to balance. Customers, he warned, are likely to pay much higher prices than they did this year. Micron is one of three major DRAM suppliers, alongside Samsung and SK Hynix, accused in a US lawsuit of worsening the shortage through price fixing.
The shortage is adding pressure to Xbox's next-generation plans. Microsoft has spent 2026 warning about a component crisis caused by an ongoing memory and storage crunch, driven in part by demand from AI datacentres. The company has said console storage and memory prices have risen by more than 2.5 times, and that it expects another doubling by the autumn of 2027. Xbox boss Asha Sharma has said the industry needs to innovate on affordability and efficiency, a difficult target when trying to launch new hardware. Project Helix, Microsoft's next console, has not been given a release date.
