Report: Sony polling devs on dropping PlayStation discs
A survey reportedly asks studios how they feel about a disc-free future, months after Sony set a 2028 date for ending physical production.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has reportedly sent developers a survey touching on the end of disc support for PlayStation consoles. The claim comes from the Moore's Law is Dead YouTube channel, which says the questionnaire is larger than almost anything the company has circulated before and asks in an indirect way how creators feel about selling games only digitally.
Word that PlayStation would halt disc production from January 2028 broke in July. Sony presented the shift as a response to consumer habits, and Game File data shows four of every five PS4 and PS5 games bought last financial year were digital. Plenty of studios and publishers have criticised the plan, among them collector-focused labels that have publicly lamented the loss of physical releases.
