PS5 Gets AI-Guided Upscaling, Live in Two Games
Sony says AI image upscaling is coming to the base PS5, in the vein of the PS5 Pro, and it already runs in Marvel's Wolverine and one other game.
Sony has announced that AI-guided image upscaling is coming to the PlayStation 5, and the technology is already switched on in two games. Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei are the first titles to use it, according to Eurogamer. The approach is similar in spirit to the upscaling that Sony introduced on the PS5 Pro, but this time it is aimed at the standard console that most owners already have under their televisions. Upscaling of this kind renders a game at a lower internal resolution and then rebuilds the frame at a higher one, using a machine-learning model to fill in detail rather than a fixed filter. The result is meant to be a sharper picture without the performance cost of pushing every pixel natively.
Sony has not said how widely the feature will spread, and no full list of supported games has been published. For now the two launch titles are the only confirmed examples, and both are already available to play. Image reconstruction has become one of the central battlegrounds of this console generation, with platform holders investing in techniques that squeeze more perceived detail out of fixed hardware. Sony's version arrives first on the console that opened the generation, rather than as an exclusive selling point for its premium model.
