Diablo 4 anniversary event called distasteful by rival dev
Path of Exile's Chris Wilson says Blizzard is winding Diablo 4 down while using its 30th anniversary to undercut the series story.
Blizzard used this year's BlizzCon to announce Diablo 5 and to make clear that Diablo 4 is winding down, with no further major expansions planned and only smaller content drops on the way. One of those is a 30th anniversary event called Season of Hell's Legacy, and Chris Wilson, a co-creator of Path of Exile, has taken issue with how it is being handled.
In a video, Wilson argued that the event throws the Prime Evils into a side story disconnected from the main plot, and that it brings back Deckard Cain despite his death in Diablo 3, while the on-stage presentation referred to Diablo itself as a birthday boy. For him this reads as a franchise treating its own storylines and villains as disposable, and as a sign Blizzard has moved on from Diablo 4.

Path of Exile
Path of Exile is an action role-playing game with a large passive skill tree and a socketed gem system, so characters are defined by combinations rather than fixed classes. It runs on a league model that restarts the economy every few months.
Diablo IV
Diablo IV returns to a dark Sanctuary with seasonal characters, loot that comes in tiers and an open world shared with other players. Progress resets each season, which is the point of the format.
