What PlatinumGames is
PlatinumGames Inc. is a Japanese developer with its head office on the eighth floor of the Umeda Sky Building in Kita-ku, Osaka. The company's own overview page lists its business as planning, development and publishing of video game titles, states its date founded as February 2006, gives capital of 1,505,000,000 yen and reports 250 employees as of January 2026. The studio has been led by Atsushi Inaba since 2006, when he left Capcom.
He had joined Capcom in 1998, became chief executive of the Capcom studio Clover Studio in 2004, and works on PlatinumGames titles as studio head. The company overview sets out the studio's portfolio in a works table that records each title with the company that published it. Those publishers include Nintendo, Xbox Game Studios, Square Enix, Sega, Konami Digital Entertainment and Activision Publishing, alongside entries published by PlatinumGames itself. The table covers releases stretching from 2009 to 2025 and lists supported platforms for each entry.
How the studio was formed
PlatinumGames describes its own formation as a merger and a name change. ODD Ltd. was established in February 2006, became ODD Inc. in July 2007 and moved its head office to the Umeda Sky Building in Osaka. In October 2007, ODD merged with SEEDS Inc., a developer set up by former key members of Capcom's Clover Studio, and the combined company took the name PlatinumGames Inc. The studio name was chosen deliberately: PlatinumGames states that it picked a metal known for holding its shape and resisting oxidation, and that the name reflects its intention to make games that keep their quality. In May 2008 the studio announced a four-title publishing deal with Sega.
NieR:Automata
NieR:Automata is listed in the PlatinumGames works table with a release date of March 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Steam, followed by Xbox One in June 2018 and Nintendo Switch in October 2022. The publisher named in the same table is Square Enix, and the platform list in the studio's own entry matches that breakdown. The company's overview page also gives a sales figure for the title, stating that NieR:Automata has sold over nine million copies across its various platforms.
The same section of the page lists awards the studio has received for earlier action titles released in 2014 and 2022. The platform breakdown in the works table records the game arriving on PlayStation 4 and Steam in March 2017, on Xbox One in June 2018 and on Nintendo Switch in October 2022. The studio also hosts a dedicated page for the title on its own website, which links to the game as one of its main works alongside entries published by other companies.
Investment and offices
PlatinumGames' own company history records two events beyond the merger. In December 2019 the studio entered into a capital alliance with Tencent Holdings Limited. In April 2020 it opened a second office, PLATINUMGAMES TOKYO, and in November 2022 it opened a third, PLATINUMGAMES FUKUOKA. The board listed on the company overview page consists of Atsushi Inaba as president, chief executive and studio head, alongside two outside directors, Shin Joon Oh and Bo Wang.
