A new publisher with film money behind it
Lyrical Games describes itself as an independent publisher based in Los Angeles. It was set up to help developers build ambitious indie and AA games in what it calls an increasingly risk-averse marketplace. The company launched in spring 2025, according to its own announcements, which makes it one of the youngest names covered in this series of studio profiles. What it lacks in history it tries to make up for in money and contacts.
Its backer is Lyrical Media, an independent storytelling company with roots in film and television. Lyrical Games is led by people who previously worked at Private Division, Devolver Digital, Humble Games and Microsoft. That blend of outside financing and hands-on publishing experience is the pitch the company makes to studios looking for a partner who will fund the work and then let the developers get on with it.
How it works with developers
The publisher says it signs transparent, collaboration-driven agreements that leave creative control and intellectual property with the developer. It offers full financing, production support and help planning a launch. In a market where many deals trade ownership for money, that promise is the company's main selling point and the thing it repeats in almost every public statement it makes about its partnerships.
The model is aimed at experienced teams rather than first projects. Lyrical's public slate lists games from studios that have shipped before, and the partnerships are framed as multi-title relationships or long-term arrangements. The publisher positions itself as a partner that stays on after launch, rather than one that signs a single game, funds it and moves on to the next deal.
The slate it has announced
Lyrical Games has revealed two titles. Valor Mortis comes from One More Level, the Krakow studio behind the Ghostrunner series. Erosion is a time-looping roguelike from Plot Twist, the team behind The Last Case of Benedict Fox, which the publisher has said is planned for an early 2027 launch after a free public playtest that ran in the middle of 2026.
Two more deals are public but unnamed. Lyrical signed a publishing agreement with The Chinese Room, the British narrative studio, and has spoken of an unannounced game from Blackbird Interactive. The pattern is the same each time: Lyrical provides the money and the publishing muscle, while the studio keeps its name, its culture and its ownership of the ideas it is building on.
Valor Mortis, its flagship release
Valor Mortis is a first-person action soulslike and the publisher's biggest bet so far. It is set in an alternate nineteenth-century Europe where Napoleon's campaign has plunged the continent into something unnatural. The player takes the role of William, a soldier brought back from a battlefield grave and changed by a plague that is spreading across the land, turning his rebirth into a weapon.
The game is due on 13 October 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC, priced at 39.99 dollars or euros, and it arrives on Xbox Game Pass on day one. Lyrical has built its marketing around the demanding combat and the horror-tinged history, and has announced a voice cast that includes Vincent Cassel as Napoleon Bonaparte, the French actor voicing the emperor. A playable demo was also released on Steam ahead of launch.
Why a publisher like this exists now
The company's founding argument is that the middle of the market is thinning. Large publishers concentrate on proven hits, while small teams struggle to fund work that is neither tiny nor blockbuster. A publisher backed by outside money, the reasoning goes, can take the chances those larger firms skip and still reach players who want something in between, and do it without a blockbuster budget.
Lyrical also spreads its risk across a slate of modestly budgeted games rather than one enormous bet. Valor Mortis is being sold at 40 dollars rather than at full price, which lowers the cost of trying it and lets the publisher keep several projects in production at the same time without depending on any single hit to justify the whole business.
