What Bungie is

Bungie is an American game studio. Its careers site states that Bungie was founded in 1991 in a one-bedroom apartment in Chicago, Illinois, and that its global headquarters are in Bellevue, Washington, in a studio of more than 100,000 square feet. The same page lists Destiny, Halo, Myth and Marathon among the studio's games, and states that the studio's goals remain to create games and to cultivate communities around them.

Our database connects Bungie with two titles, both as developer and publisher: Destiny 2 and Marathon. This profile covers the studio in that role, and covers the two games as they are recorded in our catalogue, using Bungie's own published information where it is available rather than third-party accounts. The studio's careers page also names Halo and Myth among the games it has worked on, but those titles are not recorded for Bungie in our database.

Destiny 2

Destiny 2 is the longer-running of the two titles. Bungie's careers page presents it as a first-person shooter in which players explore the solar system, unlock elemental abilities and collect gear to customise a Guardian. When announcing the studio's acquisition by Sony Interactive Entertainment on 31 January 2022, Sony stated that Bungie would continue to operate independently, maintaining the ability to self-publish and reach players wherever they choose to play.

The same announcement described what the studio was working on at that point. Sony stated that the team was focused on the long-term development of Destiny 2, on expanding the Destiny universe, and on creating entirely new worlds in future properties, and it noted that the acquisition gave Sony access to Bungie's approach to live game services and its technology. Sony also described Bungie as a long-time partner of Sony Interactive Entertainment dating back to the start of the Destiny franchise.

Marathon

Marathon is the second title in our database connected to Bungie, alongside Destiny 2, and the studio announced its release date in a news post published on its own site. Bungie announced on 20 January 2026 that Marathon releases on 5 March 2026 on Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S, and that pre-orders were available at that point.

In its public update on the studio's direction, Bungie states that Marathon did not reach as many players as the studio had hoped, and that the team plans to evolve the game beyond the genre constraints it had set for itself. The update says support will continue through the game's first year, with more emphasis on its survival elements, while work continues on Destiny.

Ownership

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on 31 January 2022 that it had agreed to acquire Bungie, a studio it described as based in Bellevue, Washington, with more than 900 employees. The announcement stated a total consideration of 3.6 billion US dollars and said Bungie would be an independent subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment, run by a board of directors chaired by Pete Parsons and by Bungie's existing management team.

Sony's announcement of completion, dated 15 July 2022, recorded that Sony Interactive Entertainment had completed the acquisition of 100 per cent of the shares of Bungie, with total consideration of approximately 3.7 billion US dollars inclusive of the purchase price and committed employee incentives. The completion notice was issued by Sony Group Corporation, Sony Interactive Entertainment's parent company, and confirms Bungie's position as a subsidiary while it continues to publish its own games.
