An Austin studio built on other people's games
Bluepoint Games was founded in 2006 in Austin, Texas, by Andy O'Neil and Marco Thrush, two engineers who had worked at Retro Studios on the Metroid Prime games. The pair set up their own team rather than staying inside a large publisher, and the studio's first release arrived the same year: Blast Factor, a PlayStation 3 title made for Sony. From the start the work was defined by the machines it appeared on rather than by characters or worlds of the studio's own invention.
The founding date and the two names matter because almost everything Bluepoint later became rests on them. Austin stayed the studio's home base for its whole life, and Thrush remained president until the end. O'Neil, the co-founder who served as vice president, died in June 2019 at the age of 47, before the studio's best-known work was finished. The company he helped start would outlive him by only a few more years.
The remaster years
Before it made remakes, Bluepoint made remasters. It handled the God of War Collection in 2009, then The Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection in 2011, and the same year worked on the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, the rare project of its that also reached an Xbox platform. Each job asked the same unusual skill: reading another team's game closely enough to move it to new hardware without breaking what made it work.
The Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection followed in 2015, rebuilding the first three Uncharted games for PlayStation 4, and Gravity Rush Remastered arrived around the same period. None of these were Bluepoint's own ideas, and none of them pretended to be. The studio's public voice was modest by design, presenting itself as a technical partner rather than an author. Its reputation grew through the quality of work that other studios were happy to hand over.
From remaster to remake
Shadow of the Colossus in 2018 marked a change in scale rather than in kind. Where earlier projects adapted existing work, this PlayStation 4 version recreated the presentation almost completely, with new models, lighting and environments, while keeping the structure and feel of the 2005 original intact. Reviews treated it as a faithful rebuild rather than a replacement, which was exactly the intended result.
That project set up the studio's most conspicuous job. Sony's PlayStation 5 needed a flagship at launch, and Bluepoint delivered a full remake of Demon's Souls. The original, developed by FromSoftware, first appeared on PlayStation 3 in Japan in 2009. Bluepoint's version kept the punishing combat and the fogbound kingdom of Boletaria, and changed almost everything about how they looked.
Demon's Souls and the PS5 launch
Demon's Souls arrived with the PlayStation 5 in November 2020, sold by Sony Interactive Entertainment. PlayStation's own store page describes it as a remake rebuilt from the ground up, offering 4K and high-frame-rate display modes, fast loading, plus haptic and 3D audio features the 2009 game could not have had. For many early PS5 owners it was the single strongest reason to buy the console at launch.
It was also the clearest statement of what Bluepoint could do. The studio had spent fifteen years proving it could reproduce another team's craft at higher fidelity, and here it applied that to a game with a famously demanding audience. The result was treated as a benchmark for remakes, and it raised expectations for whatever Bluepoint would build next. In interviews at the time, the studio said that next step would be something of its own.
Sony, independence, and what came next
Sony had worked with Bluepoint for years before buying it. PlayStation Studios announced the acquisition on 30 September 2021, and Thrush described Austin as home base since the studio's founding in 2006, with a team of close to seventy talented people and growing. The studio said its next project would be original content, stepping away from the remakes that had defined it.
That plan never reached the public. In January 2025 Sony confirmed it had cancelled an unannounced live-service game Bluepoint had been developing, reported as a God of War project, leaving the team without a greenlit title. What followed was a long stretch of pitching ideas rather than building games, and the studio's output stalled while its owner reviewed where money should go.
The end of the studio
Sony announced in February 2026 that it would close Bluepoint Games, with the shutdown taking effect that March and roughly seventy jobs lost. A PlayStation spokesperson framed the decision as the result of a recent business review and praised the team's technical skill, while studio leadership pointed to rising development costs and a difficult industry climate. It was one more closure in a hard stretch for the division.
Reports said Bluepoint pitched several projects in its final year and was turned down each time, including a Bloodborne remake and new work tied to other PlayStation series such as Ghost of Tsushima. Sony wound the studio down rather than selling it. Demon's Souls remains its last released game, and the name now stands for a particular kind of craft, and for a model of studio that may no longer have a place.

Questions people ask
What is Bluepoint Games known for?
Remakes and remasters of other studios' games, most notably the PlayStation 5 remake of Demon's Souls and the 2018 PlayStation 4 remake of Shadow of the Colossus, along with collections for God of War, Ico, Metal Gear Solid and Uncharted.
Who owned Bluepoint Games?
Sony. PlayStation Studios announced the acquisition on 30 September 2021, ending years of close partnership. Sony later confirmed it would close the studio in 2026, so Bluepoint no longer operates as an independent or first-party team.
Did Bluepoint make Demon's Souls?
